Apple said to be working on HD audio playback for iOS 8, in-ear headphones and more

A report out of Japan says that Apple is working on HD audio playback for iOS 8. This dovetails with speculation that Apple will introduce HD iTunes playback at WWDC next month. It also happens to coincide with talk that Apple will be offering in-ear headphones and a new Lightning cable. The earphones have not been updated since 2008, and still can be bought at any Apple Store for $79. The rumored acquisition of Beats Audio is merely a coincidence here, since Apple's main target is the streaming music service, Beats Music.

The current stock iOS 7 music app is limited as far as high-definition music playback is concerned. 24-bit tracks with a sample rate above 48Mhz will not play. Even third party apps that do offer HD audio are limited in iOS 7. The new HD iTunes will match up with the audio capabilities expected to be announced for iOS 8. And in order to make sure that the new HD audio will be supported on third party accessories, Apple is believed to be ready to unveil a new Lightning cable that will work on Made For iPhone (MFi) approved products.

All of the festivities will start on June 2nd when WWDC 2014 kicks off in San Francisco. Besides unveiling iOS 8, the new earphones and Lightning cable, Apple might show off new senior advisers, Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. That is, assuming that the deal is announced before the conference opens.
